When I first completed my master’s degree, I felt like I had a lot of catching up to do. I had dreams, and knew that I needed a financial plan to be successful. What’s money got to do with building your dreams? Everything.
I picked up three books from local libraries and bookstores to learn more about finances: Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey, Young, Fabulous, and Broke by Suze Orman, and Automatic Millionaire by David Bach. While all of these books taught me important techniques around saving and avoiding debt, it was the simplicity of David Bach’s approach that stuck with me. I later picked up a copy of his book, Smart Women Finish Rich, which tailored his advice for women.
David Bach explains that the best way to accumulate wealth over time is to automate your savings. Ever since, I’ve been sure to identify a portion of my check (no matter how small it was during those years of doctoral studies) to go directly into savings, bypassing my checking account. This made it possible for me to save up for job changes, periods where I needed to study full time, as well as establish a budget for vacations (I love travel and have been to more than 20 countries so far).
In several of his books, David suggests that the small everyday expenses we rarely think about could mean all the difference in being financially prepared for retirement. He refers to this as The Latte Factor. I learned to identify what I valued most and align my finances with that. Knowing where my money was going allowed me to focus on my goals and not feel deprived when passing up on luxuries that were in conflict with my goals.
Although I first read these books over a decade ago, they have shaped my financial approach, and I have recommended them to friends on several occasions. It has always been part of my vision for this blog to be able to give away free copies of the books that changed my life. This week, I had an opportunity to attend the Smart Women Finish Rich Seminar, held by Edelman Financial Services in Los Angeles. As part of my registration, I received a copy of Smart Women Finish Rich, as well as a copy to give away to a friend. I was excited, because I know the importance of financial planning in fueling my own dreams. So, I could not wait to get home from the seminar and create a giveaway that will allow two of my followers to win their very own copies of Smart Women Finish Rich. This book explains how to align your money with your values, and provides a wealth of information on how you can start planning for your financial future.
You can enter the giveaway below, through 9pm PST on Sunday, November 2. The winner will be randomly chosen on Monday, November 3. Don’t forget to comment on how this book can help you with your goals, to get another chance at winning! Good luck!
